After the Indian Removal Act became law under President Jackson, villages moved out of the area and white settlers moved in. In 1848, the construction of the Illinois and Michigan Canal was completed and connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River, providing a critical transportation hub that ran through the countryside connecting rural towns such as Romeoville. The village was incorporated in 1895 after a 42 to 20 vote. On January 21st, Romeoville was officially established as a village.
